"Another university administrator explained that his institution simply could not afford to buy enough copies of Microsoft programs for his whole campus under the new policy -- especially software, such as Visual Basic, that only a select group of students needs. He said his institution would have to buy competitors' products instead. 'You will no longer be present,' he said, 'and that's a disadvantage for you.'" "'We do not run like a corporation runs,' Arnold Hirshon, vice-provost for information resources at Lehigh University, told Ms. Spain. 'We cannot fully control [students'] behavior.'" <http://chronicle.com/data/internet.dir/itdata/1997/12/t97120401.htm> |
